Contact My Building Calculators: report a result, ask a question, or suggest a tool

Every span, stair and quantity calculator on this site is checked against its source table, and a number that still disagrees with your copy of the code is the most useful thing you can send. This page tells you what to include so the report can be traced and fixed, and what kinds of questions the form cannot answer.

What to send when you report a calculator result

A report can only be traced back to the table if it carries the same four things the methodology and disclaimer pages ask for. Include them and the check usually takes one look at the source PDF.

  • The calculator. Its name or the page address, for example floor joist span or deck beam span.
  • The inputs you used. Species, grade, size, spacing, load, span or whatever the tool asked for, exactly as you entered them.
  • The table and page you checked. The IRC 2021 table number and the page in your copy of the code, or the DCA 6-2015 table for deck footings.
  • The value your copy prints. The figure you expected against the figure the calculator gave.

Known misprints in the printed tables are already logged and footnoted in the tools, so check the misprinted cells documented on the methodology page first; if your cell is on it, the calculator is showing the corrected value on purpose.

Send a message to My Building Calculators

Use the form for reports, questions about how a calculator reads its table, and suggestions. Name and email are needed so a reply can reach you; the other fields help a report get checked without a second round of questions.

Submissions are used only to answer your message. See the privacy policy for how the site handles the data you enter.

Questions this contact page cannot answer

The site is a set of reference calculators built from published code tables, maintained by one person who is not a licensed engineer, architect, contractor or code official. That sets a hard limit on what a reply can contain, and the disclaimer spells it out in full.

    • No design or sizing advice. Whether a member is adequate for your house is a question for a licensed design professional, not for this form.
    • No plan or drawing review. Attachments asking whether a layout will pass will not be reviewed.
    • No ruling on your jurisdiction. Which code edition and amendments apply where you build is decided by your local building department, and only they can answer it.
    • No cost estimates. The calculators give quantities and code lookups, never prices, and the site does not quote or estimate work.

Suggest a calculator or a source correction

Suggestions for new tools are welcome when they fit the scope of the site: a geometry or quantity calculation, or a lookup in a published prescriptive table. Tools that would need a proprietary manufacturer table, a cost database or structural design are out of scope and are declined, for the reasons set out on the methodology page.

Corrections to a source citation are treated the same way as wrong-number reports: name the page, the claim, and the section of the code or guide that contradicts it.

Who answers messages sent through this form

Messages go to Syed Zulqarnain, who builds and maintains every calculator on the site. There is no support team and no separate address; replies come from him, in the order received. Reports that turn out to be a real error are fixed in the calculator, noted on the methodology page, and answered with what was changed.

These calculators are a reference, not a substitute for a licensed engineer or your local building department. Confirm local amendments before building. Read the methodology →
